Porcelain bowl with copper red flambé glaze exterior and white ground interior. Exterior glaze a characteristic reddish flambé glaze with red-to-white gradation along the curve of the body. Slightly curved lip and raised foot. Includes wooden base and brocaded box. Flambé glazes are high-fired iridescent glazes with a variety of blue, purple, red tones. The sheen is produced by using copper oxide and fired in a reducing atmosphere. No two flambé glazed wares are alike, thus each piece is unique. This particular vase is an 18th century reddish sang de boeuf glaze or langyaohong glaze, which refers to a Qing dynasty revival of red monochrome wares that were produced in the early Ming and Song dynasties. Eighteenth century sang de boeuf glaze wares are typified by a very subtle mottled covereage, streaked effects, and subtle red-to-white gradations.
