Moulded white glazed image of the happy Monk Budai, an emanation of bodhisattva Maitreya, shown seated and leaning on a large back of treasures, left knee raised and supporting the left hand with a rosary and right hand relaxing on the bag, his loose robes revealing his prodigious chest and smiling face with pendulous earlobes. A similar example can be found in Sotheby’s New York sale of the Junkunc Collection, 27SEPT2021, lot 569.
