Ink and colour on paper scene of two gentlemen at a low table admiring the calligraphy of the third, a servant entering with a wine jar. Signed Xiaoshi mid left and three seals of the artist. The scene, one that Fu Xiaoshi revisited several times in his career, particularly after his 1979 stroke and his switch to painting with his left hand.

Eldest son of the great master Fu Baoshi (1904 – 1965). Compare with a small ink monochrome study titled “Drinking” of a similar scene 33.6 x 46 cm, in Christie’s sale 29MAY2017, Lot 1679.
