Lot #116

Yellow Ground Susancai Calligraphy Hat Stand

素三彩帽筒

China, 20th century
Dimensions 20” (50.8 cm) wide

Ink and light colour on paper folding fan format with a dense forest scene of a scholar’s retreat and open pavilion approached by a bridge set in rockery with willows. Signed Songyan upper left and three seals of the artist. Cyclically dated to 1949.

The view into the open buildings of the villa or retreat and showing off books and furnishings is a perspective Qian Songyan used a number of times in his more intimate landscape views. Compare a similar format in a hanging scroll format of 1948 sold in China Guardian Hong Kong, autumn (December) 2015, Lot 1009. Elements such as the luohan bed, looks on a table, rockery anchoring the bridge flanked by willow trees are all evident in both paintings.
