Sui-Tang White-Glazed Handled Jar
China, Sui (581-618) to early Tang Dynasty (618-907)
Dimensions: 10.4″ (26.5cm) H
Of elongated ovoid form with a low cylindrical neck and rim, the shoulders with 4 heavily formed double lug handles luted to the body, narrow splayed unglazed foot, the glaze of cream white and finely crackled.
Compare with a similar white stoneware jar in the collection of the British Museum, dated Sui (581-618), Hebei province, ref. 1968,0422.23 Sedgwick Bequest. Compare also with a very similar jar from the Collection of Sakamoto Goro in Sotheby’s New York, sale 13SEP16 Lot 7, 30.9 cm H.
